During the 1979-80 school year, the Old Bridge Township School District promoted and implemented a career education program. Its chief aim was to expand career education from the middle school into the elementary and special education divisions. The project was used as a vehicle to enhance career education, expand and involve elementary teachers, and prepare students in one specific career skill area so that they could better avail themselves of the middle school career opportunities and proceed to grow in career and occupational knowledge. Students serviced by the project were 904 regular sixth-grade students and approximately 200 special education students, age ten to eighteen. The project director developed teacher and principal program packets and children program packets consisting of data sheets, bank books, job applications, stock certificates, and mock money for use in "T & N Bucks," a daily on-going program with one weekly, formal Bank Day. The instructional intent was to develop incentive leading toward academic success. Students accumulated money for academic success, earned money through financial investment and employment opportunities, and lost money on their jobs if they failed to meet agreed-upon criteria. They were also involved in career awareness programs to help develop an improved self-awareness. Findings indicated need for teacher participation in curriculum material development and extensive on-going teacher inservice on integrating career education into existing curriculum and expansion of the program to Grades 4-5.
