Newspaper Bargains: Clothing I and II. Teacher's Guide [and] Student Materials.
Kenne, Linda
The document contains student materials and teacher's guides for two units in which students analyze clothing advertisements in newspapers. The units are appropriate for reading and mathematics classes in grades 4-6. Objectives for Unit I include identifying descriptive words used in clothing ads, categorizing words found in clothing ads, and comprehending clothing ads in order to make value judgments in purchasing clothing. Students analyze "fashion" words such as favorite, distinctive, and famous maker, and find advertisements using these words. They also examine "quality" words such as comfort, value, durable, sturdy, and versatile and words which express savings. On an imaginary buying trip, students calculate the cost of a complete outfit bought at sale prices. Unit II objectives are to change fraction and percent figures to decimals and to use percents to determine the amount of discounts on clothing items. In ten activities, students use current newspaper advertisements to calculate the cost of items offered at discount prices. The teacher's guides list objectives and materials needed and include methods for using newspapers in the classroom, resources, reproducible pre- and posttests and worksheets with keys, and student progress sheets.
