Handbook of English Grammar for Teachers of English as a Second Language.

The contents of this handbook are designed to help teachers clarify, in their own minds, many of the grammatical points that might be raised in the English as a second language classroom. Each chapter ends with exercises and a discussion of classroom implications of the topics raised. Chapter I covers parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and function words. Chapter II discusses word order and sentence patterns. Topics covered in Chapter III include noun phrase structure, premodifiers, postmodifiers, the article system, and functions of noun phrases. Chapter IV covers verb phrase, verb patterns, grammatical properties, lexical verbs, auxiliary verbs, finite vs. non-finite, and adverbials. Chapter V discusses coordination and subordination, semantic implications, linked units, and other forms of linking. Topics covered in chapter VI include affirmative and negative statements, questions, commands, "it" and "there" as subjects, and embedded sentences. The final chapter is devoted to a discussion of structural vs. functional. A bibliography is appended. (JB)
