This guide to teaching English as a second language to newly arrived adult immigrants has chapters devoted to the characteristics of the adult learner; the teaching of listening, pronunciation, reading, and writing; vocabulary building; lesson planning, and assessing student performance. Approximately half the book is devoted to a discussion of classroom techniques, covering drills, dialogues, how to ask questions, audiovisual aids, orientation and citizenship training, newspapers in the classroom, teaching with stories, field trips, and the use of music and games. Several articles by guest contributors are included, and a bibliography and recommended readings are appended. (JB)
