The New Look of Children's Picture Books.
Chapman, Diane L.
Significant directions that children's picture books have taken during the past several decades are examined in this paper, and numerous books are cited to illustrate the points discussed. The paper considers the following topics: (1) innovations in illustrative style and in the types of media used to illustrate picture books, (2) the advent and rise in popularity of the wordless picture book, (3) the movement toward realism in topic and treatment as a recent trend in picture books, and (4) the need for evaluation of children's picture books. It also provides lists of children's picture books and of Caldecott Award winning picture books from 1938 through 1980 and includes annotated lists of wordless picture books and of picture books with realistic themes, divided according to the themes with which they deal.
