Motivating Students: The AMP's Program Concept.

The model of motivational focus that is used as the basis for a number of educational programs called Application/Motivation Programs that have been developed at Harding School, in Rochester, New York, is discussed in this paper. The motivational model is described as including a sequence that involves self-choice, self-direction, personal involvement, and follow through, with each of these four areas designated as a major or secondary goal for each program. Titles of the programs described include Reading is FUNdamental, Sustained Silent Reading, Read-a-Thon, Student Book Store, and Pioneer Week. It is reported that positive opinions toward the program have been expressed by parents, students, and teachers. (MKM)
