Unsolicited Remarks: On the Nature and Purpose of University Education. Teaching-Learning Issues, No. 39, Winter 1979.
McLean, James Dickson
The need to improve the quality of university education, the relationship between university and student, and suggestions for reform are examined. It is suggested that first-quarter students be provided the opportunity to attend a sequence of interdepartmental courses and a seminar that would address the nature and purpose of education. The need to develop the ability to think rather than just to know facts about issues is noted. The emphasis in current times on entertainment and a view of life satisfaction in terms of sensation and possession rather than in terms of comprehension and expression is noted. Additional cultural influences that affect today's students are considered. (SW)
