Corporal Punishment in the Care of Children: A Literature Review and Analysis.

The literature on the use of corporal punishment with children is reviewed, legal opinions on the issue are cited, and research on the social and behavioral aspects of corporal punishment are discussed. The literature is noted to focus on guidelines for administering corporal punishment, the importance of the relationship between the adult and child, the need to apply punishment early during the misbehavior, and the negative spillover effect of punishment on other children. Literature against the use of corporal punishment is reviewed, citing the risks and questionable effectiveness associated with its use. The fine line between corporal punishment as discipline and as abuse is noted. Included in the appendixes are an analysis of legal issues relating to corporal punishment, content analysis of state legislation regarding corporal punishment, and a review of alternative methods of child management and discipline.
