These materials are part of a four-module series, "Competence Is for Everyone," designed to specify and reduce limitations on the learning and use of skills that people experience because of their sex or race. The series identifies three areas that function to maintain inequalities: the process of making judgments or appraisals; practices of social institutions in education, employment, and the mass media; and legal precedents and historical antecedents. Appraisal is treated as it occurs with respect to group membership, i.e., sex and minority status. This module, written for students at the upper grade-level, examines appraisal as expressed in minority status through activities focused on: (1) identifying human needs; (2) building an awareness of minority group history and status in employment and education; and (3) recognizing individuals and groups responsible for legal and social changes. A teacher's guide with instructions and worksheets accompanies this student text. (Author/HLM)
