Federal Obligations to Universities and Colleges Continued Real Growth in FY 1978. Science Resources Studies Highlights, February 20, 1980.

Developments in federal funding to individual colleges and universities are presented. Information included is: (1) Federal R&D funding principally accounted for the 15% increase in total Federal obligations to universities and colleges in 1978; (2) A sharp rise of 15% occurred as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) increased its R&D allocations to academic institutions by 14%, accounting for more than two-fifths of the total growth in Federal academic R&D funding in 1978; and (3) Between 1975 and 1978, total Federal academic obligations increased an average of 11% per year in constant dollars compared to a 5% annual increase between 1963 and 1975.
