This discussion reviews the effects of technology and economics on the publishing and influence of scholarly journals and their role as a communications medium. Areas covered include the functions of the primary journal, economic pressures, and the availability of new technologies such as computers, synoptic journals, microforms, word processing equipment, electronic journals, and the digitized transmission of information.
