The first of three volumes of an integrated course in intermediate Persian is presented. Emphasis is on the "four skills approach," involving speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing. Ideally students completing all the volumes should be able to read most texts of medium difficulty independently using a dictionary, carry on simple free conversation on most topics, understand the substance of normal discourse, and write easily and correctly in simple narrative style. About half the reading material reflects interest in the social sciences and the other half in the humanities. A balance between colloquial and formal styles is also attempted, as well as between varieties of expository prose: descriptive narrative, fiction, folklore, journalism, and essays. An attempt has been made to provide actual texts whose content will be of interest to students. This first volume is seen largely as a review of the first year of instruction. Simple readings and brief grammatical review lead into the full intermediate level. Dialogues have been recorded and transcribed using standard Tehran colloquial pronunciation and usage as far as possible. Drills are also included. (SW)
