Functional Vision Assessment for the Severely Impaired/Visually Handicapped.
Dougherty, Shirley; Levy, Debra
The paper describes an approach to assessing the visual functioning of severely and/or profoundly impaired students. The assessment consists of three phases: identification, testing, and formal assessment. A checklist is used for identification. Testing considerations include medical factors (such as medications and effects of other handicaps), reinforcement factors (e.g., social reinforcement and light reinforcement), and time factors (medication schedule and location of tests are among factors to be considered). Procedures for the formal assessment include the use of a Light Chart, and/or an Object Chart. Among findngs noted are pupil response, peripheral response, focusing, and tracking. The results are used for program planning and as a method of determining visual performance abilities. Appended are the checklist, light and object charts, and the evaluation summary form. (PHR)
