This handbook on determining superintendent compensation is designed as an aid to school boards and superintendents who are in the process of determining superintendent compensation. It outlines a number of practical steps that school boards and superintendents can take in arriving at a rational and equitable compensation decision and provides an analytical framework and rationale for these steps. The handbook includes five chapters. Each chapter contains background information and specific discussion of discrete steps in the compensation process. These steps include (1) establishing a salary framework within which comparative superintendent salary data may be placed, (2) assessing the value of the position of superintendent, (3) evaluating the superintendent's performance, (4) providing those compensation elements that meet board of education and superintendent objectives, and (5) making the final decision regarding superintendent compensation. The appendices present current and historical data on superintendents' contract salaries and how they compare with selected salaries of other administrators, and summarizes some of the more common fringe benefits in use today.
