Of Speech and Time: Temporal Speech Patterns in Interpersonal Contexts.
Sieqman, Aron W., Ed.; Feldstein, Stanley, Ed.
The temporal patterning of speech, primarily within the context of interpersonal exchanges, is traced in this cross-section of research exploring the major directions such studies have taken. Eighteen authors contributed selections to support the thesis that time as a dimension of speech reflects many of the important processes that occur during speech production. The contributions range from theoretical notions about the origin of language to the time patterns that characterize the development of speech. The relationship between the pacing of adult conversation and self-reported personality attributes is also discussed. Some articles examine the relationship of the temporal structure of speech to speech production; others examine biological, personality and social influences on temporal speech patterns; still others explore developmental progression and biorhythmical effects.
