Infusing Career and Liberal Arts Education at William James College. Final Evaluation Report.
Rogers, Terry H.; Seeley, John A.
An external evaluation was conducted to assess the model for infusing career education and liberal arts education developed at William James College (Michigan). The primary purpose of the evaluation was to assess the broad impact of the career education project on William James College (WJC) and to measure specifically the extent to which WJC accomplished its objectives. Student objectives focused on strengthening career decision-making skills and increasing the use of career education-related resources. Faculty objectives focused on increasing knowledge of career education concepts, especially in relation to liberal arts education, and increasing their use of career education-related teaching and learning strategies. Data was collected by interviewing both the faculty and randomly selected student samples at the beginning of the project and again at the end of the contract period. Not all contract objectives were accomplished at the levels originally intended, but results indicated that the faculty became clearer about the college's mission and some faculty became clearer about career education. Sixty percent of the faculty said they were using career education strategies more often, while forty percent said they were not (those 40% may have been using them before contract activities began). Modest but important indications revealed that students were more satisfied with their college experience over the last half of the contract period; however, there was too short a time span between the first and second student interviews to adequately assess change in student outcomes. Some general issues regarding transferability were identified along with the special features of the infusion model at WJC. (BM)
