American Samoa Development Planning Office, Pago Pago.
Designed to serve as the basis for systematic collection of statistical information for government and the private sector, this bulletin presents a wide variety of economic indicators in tabular form. The data, selected to facilitate government and private planning efforts, are displayed in 25 tables and 27 graphs. Information is organized under 11 topics: demography, vital statistics, migration patterns, government finance, employment and income, consumer price index, imports and exports, agricultural products, motor vehicles, building permits, and registered business. In most cases data are reported through fiscal year 1978 with many tables showing trends from the early 1970's through 1978. Population figures cover the period from 1960 to 1977 with projections for 1981; a steady growth rate is shown since 1972 with a population of approximately 32,000 expected in 1981. Birth and death rates are given for the period from 1964-1976 and show a decline in birth rate from 43.0 to 34.0 per thousand population and a decline in infant mortality from 22.6 to 19.0 per thousand live births. Employment statistics are given for 1970-1978 and projected for 1980; unemployment rates range from a low of 8.6% in 1973 to a high of 19.1% in 1976 with 12.5% expected in 1980. (JH)
