Nissitissit River Investigation.
Prepared for the student participant, this manual guides a day's exploration of the Nissitissit River. The unit, one of several developed in conjunction with Project Exploration, has the broad goals of promoting--through experiential learning in a variety of environments outside the classroom--the student's self-confidence and ability to work successfully in group activities. The manual provides brief descriptions of the Nissitissit River in particular and river ecology in general and gives direction for a variety of student activities: exploration of a beaver lodge, collection and identification of aquatic insects, observation of the effect of the river on its surroundings, river depth readings, an upstream canoe race, and evaluation of the field trip experience. Specific activities include comparing insect populations in two areas of the river, recording findings on a data sheet, describing important characteristics of the areas where insects were collected, and drawing an ideal aquatic bug. The evaluation calls for each student's narrative account of his personal and educational value of the field trip. (JH)
