A Cultural Checklist: A Technique for Selecting Reading Materials for Foreign Students.
Allen, Walter P.
This guide discusses material selection criteria for those who teach English reading skills to adult non-English speakers. It is argued that in order to achieve a grasp of meaning in a second language, the student must have some experience with the culture from which that meaning arises. For the selection of material, a checklist of American culture is presented, in which five specific short stories are identified as dealing with or ignoring such aspects of American culture as social equality, economic competitiveness, meeting basic needs, and social structure. Two of the readings, the texts for which are not included, are then made the focus of lesson plans in which student response to cultural considerations raised by the stories is elicited. Appendices include: (1) a bibliography, (2) excerpts from a report on a test for comparative readability of five passages from English classics, (3) records of readability counts of the five short stories, and (4) the Dale list of 769 easy words.
