Training to Facilitate the Education of the Severely Handicapped. Final Report.

The document presents the final report of a training program to facilitate sound working relationships among parents, paraprofessionals, and educators in the education of severely and profoundly retarded children. Three program phases are outlined: Phase I--development of written and audiovisual training materials pertaining to existing teaching methods, appropriate assessment techniques, curriculum content, performance monitoring, and effective strategies for implementing coordinated home-school education programs; Phase II--implementation of a nationwide training program utilizing the materials developed during the preceding phase; and Phase III--provision of individualized training via the project staff to trainees at the state and local levels to assist them in adapting the training module for use with special groups of parents, paraprofessionals and educators, and evaluation of the summative impact of the project. Descriptions of completed and future training activities and the evaluation data collected to assess the impact of the program are presented and discussed. Appendixes, which make up the bulk of the document, include the following: a list of the national advisory committee, a detailed outline of the books titled "Right to Education--Where Are We and How Did We Get Here?'""The Public School--Administration, Organization, and Financing,""Educational Programing in the Public Schools--General Considerations,""The Public School--Daily Programing in the Classroom," and "Parent/Professional Partnership--How to Make it Work;" a copy of the Parent/Professional Partnership training workshop manual; and sample forms for selecting and implementing parent/professional project training programs.
