The Cardston School Division Project for the Improvement in the Language Arts Using ECRI Procedures.

This is the final report of the Cardston School Division Project for Improvement in the Language Arts, a three-year project in Alberta, Canada, using Exemplary Center for Reading Instruction (ECRI) strategies and materials and having as its objectives the improvement of language arts teaching, student achievement in language arts, students' self-concepts and social relations, and the learning rates of all elementary school students in the division. Following an introductory section, the nine major sections of the report provide information relative to the following: elementary school pupil ability, achievement, and self-concept development in terms of grade score gains or losses and percentile rankings; the faithfulness and consistency of teachers to the ECRI training program and criteria; pupil mastery and speed of learning; the applied written composition of elementary school pupils through analysis and comparisons of measures of the quality and skill in the use of the mechanics of expression; scores and comparisons of the pupils on the Saskatoon Public School Handwriting Scale; a study of the possible outcomes of the project other than those being measured by formal observation and testing; pupil attendance rates; general conclusions reached by the external evaluation team; and recommendations made by that team.
