Based on the evaluators' experience with a large-scale curriculum development project, this manual is designed to aid those who plan and implement field tests of educational products (instructional procedures and materials) in natural school settings. Within the procedures discussed, problems likely to arise are described. The steps in implementing field tests are: (1) general considerations, including alternatives, purposes, criteria, and planning; (2) management, including financing, negotiations, scheduling, staffing, evaluation staff training, community relations, and monitoring; (3) design, including site selection, sampling, data, instruments, data collection, data processing, and data analysis; and (4) reporting (both during field testing and after field testing), including content, format, timing, and distribution.
