This report presents preliminary steps taken in a program to increase parental and community involvement in the Paterson (New Jersey) public schools. It offers recommendations concerned with developing closer ties between the schools and the community. The publication begins with a brief description of the initiation of the program. It presents a review of the literature regarding parental and community involvement in the schools. It then presents an analysis of current community involvement in the Paterson schools. Results of interviews with principals and municipal officials concerning the schools are presented. The interviewees noted that community involvement is very low, and the principals interviewed felt that there should be more community involvement. The planning committee concluded that (1) the school board and city officials should issue a joint policy statement to increase interagency cooperation, (2) the schools should do more to meet the needs of adults, and (3) a community involvement staff development program should be initiated for principals.
