Reading Achievement of Classified Students, Grades 7-8.
Bartolf, Marcia M.
A study of 24 handicapped students functioning on or below grade level was conducted to examine their reading achievement in three different reading programs. The students were placed in a remedial reading program, a reading program in a resource room, or a regular reading class depending on past grade achievements and recommendations of former teachers and child study teams. Pretests and posttests were administered to measure reading achievement. Results showed that there was no significant difference in gain among the three groups, indicating that handicapped students who are mainstreamed into regular classes fare as well as their counterparts in self-contained classes. Further, the stigma of being members of special education classes is removed when students are mainstreamed. (TJ)
