Second Year Evaluation of Harrisburg City School District's Experience-Based Career Education Program.

An evaluation was conducted of the Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) Experience-Based Career Education (EBCE) program at the end of its second year of implementation. Evaluation data were collected in the following ways: regular meetings with project staff; on-site observations of program activities; results from pre and posttesting students; inspection of a sample of learning activities; interviews with students; telephone survey of parents; conversations with resource persons at experience sites; employer questionnaires; inspection of attendance records of students; inspection of records of counselor/learning site specialist; and planning session with consultants and EBCE staff. Evaluation data indicated that EBCE students did as well as students with similar abilities in the regular high school program. EBCE students showed improved attitudes toward work and recognized the importance of learning marketable skills. EBCE students learned tasks performed by people in various occupations and had an opportunity to explore several different occupations. In addition, EBCE students showed better work habits in school and their attendance improved. Overall reactions by parents, employers, and students were favorable. Recommendations were made to improve the development of sequenced learning activities and coordination of the learning activities with experience site activities. (BM)
