A Programme in Oracy.
Wootton, Astrid
The oral English program of a parochial girls' school in Australia is described in this paper. Included in the description are the schedule of classes; the qualifications of the teaching staff; and the teaching philosophy, which is based on the concepts that students absorb more during classes than the manifest lesson content and that the greater the variety of linguistic demand, the greater the control of language usage built by students. Emphasized in the report is the rapport and mutual support among the instructional staff and the importance of building interpersonal relations in the classroom between teacher and students. Problems of assessment in such a program are also discussed. (AEA)
