An overview of some recent trends in occupational licensing is described and some of the current problems in licensing and regulation are discussed. Issues which are covered include: the proliferation of occupations which seek licensing and the opposition to these new groups by already established related occupations; the composition of licensing boards and the role of public members representing consumer interests; the accountability of the licensing boards to state legislatures and the degree of autonomy which the boards should retain; enforcement of disciplinary action against practitioners; continuing education in order to maintain competence; and the scope various occupations' practices and the infringement on these practices by emerging occupational groups.
