War--Student Unit. War--Teacher's Manual.
Ontario Inst. for Studies in Education, Toronto. Dept. of Educational Administration.
The guide contains six episodes, suitable for the secondary level, designed to focus attention on the moral issues involved in war. It is presented in two sections. Section I discusses four objectives of values education and how the suggested activities contribute to their attainment. These objectives are: (1) differentiating value judgments, claims, and issues from other sorts of judgments, claims, or issues; (2) understanding the logic of values reasoning in order to identify sound arguments; (3) understanding the different kinds of value judgments a person can make; and (4) testing the adequacy of the standards one uses in making value judgments. Activities which help students attain the ability to make rational judgments include factual claim/value judgment, points of view, and practical syllogism exercises; a Reasons Assembly Chart; dilemma discussions; and role-playing and principle testing exercises. The second section presents the sequential episodes which are entitled: What is War?; War--Heroic or Foolhardy?; War and the Moral Point of View; The Just War; War and the Restriction of Freedom; and New Weapons and Future Wars. Objectives and procedures are listed for all episodes. (KC)
