This is a condensed report of a study commissioned by the Minister's Advisory Committee on Student Achievement (MACOSA) to study student achievement in science at grades three, six, nine, and twelve in Alberta, Canada. Baseline information for future assessments and a summary of student achievement of curricular objectives were to be provided. Between 2000 and 3000 students were tested at each grade level. Student performances on each cluster of items were generally satisfactory. Some specific areas of weakness were identified: (1) knowledge of physical science in grades three, six and twelve; (2) knowledge of scientific methods in grade three; and (3) earth-space science and general knowledge of science in grades nine and twelve. Twelve recommendations regarding assessments are given. (MK)
