Proceedings of the Workshop on Retention of Minority Undergraduate Students in Engineering (Cambridge, Massachusetts, October 30-November 2, 1977).
National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council, Washington, DC. Committee on Minorities in Engineering; Massachusetts Inst. of Tech., Cambridge.
The objectives of this workshop, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977, were to form recommendations and to develop strategies for the implementation of these recommendations derived from a thorough review and assessment of the educational experiences of minority undergraduate students in engineering, and to develop strategies for implementing the recommendations. One contribution of the workshop was the definition of the minimum conditions necessary for the structuring, implementing, and evaluating of academic support services designed to reduce the attrition of minority students. Another result was the redefinition of pre-freshman summer academic enrichment projects and college programs. The workshop provided profiles of academic success and failure in engineering degree programs. It also led to an examination of various nonacademic components of university activities affecting academic performance and provided an assessment of funding sources, governance, and organizational structures of support programs for minorities in engineering.
