A Comparison of the Reading Achievement of Queensland Year 5 Pupils between 1971 and 1977.
The 1976 reading achievement scores of year 5 pupils in Queensland (Australia) primary schools were compared with the scores of year 5 pupils in 1971, using Reading Test QR5. The sample included 1,754 students in 111 primary schools. Analysis of the results showed that scores for vocabulary development, comprehension of implied meaning, and reading speed declined significantly from the all-time high scores of 1971. No changes occurred in total reading comprehension, comprehension of literal meaning, and scores on the QR5 basic reading test. Concern for decline in reading test scores led to a retest in 1977, which showed no change in reading ability between 1976 and 1977. Although reading achievement in 1977 was lower than in the peak year of 1971, achievement was higher in 1977 than in any other periodic survey since 1955. (RL)
