Reading Improvement through the Arts.
Lidstone, John, Comp.
This booklet contains a description of Reading Improvement Through the Arts, a prototype program funded by the Elementary Secondary Education Act Title I that was developed and implemented in the state of New York. The Reading Improvement Through the Arts (RITA) program is described as an alternative way to reach previously unreachable pupils. The booklet reports that where the approach has been implemented, the arts, in all forms, have proven to be powerful motivational and methodological devices that result in strong gains in basic communication skills for the pupils who participated in the programs. Sections in the booklet provide an overview of the program; discuss identifying an acceptable student population; state the essential outline for instructional and supportive activities; discuss frequency of instruction, participant/staff ratio, and individual pupil program records; list instructional, supervisory, and support services staff obligations, and program objectives and evaluation design; and discuss staff training, needs assessment, dissemination of information, budgeting, planning/grants, and relevant publications.
