Indicators of Youth Unemployment and Education in Industrialized Nations.
Mushkin, Selma J.; Jung, Ann M.
This is a compilation of data on youth employment, educational services, and incentives which impact on unemployment of youth and generate social costs beyond the costs of unemployment benefits and waste in education. Each of the report's seven sections presents statistical information that can be used to evaluate current practices in industrialized nations and suggests the potential success of new policies. Following an introductory section and a discussion of comparisons among intercountry data, the first section presents the dimension of youth unemployment in selected industrialized nations and puts it in the context of national population and labor force statistics. Section 2 identifies the characteristics of employment available to youths. The third section presents data on education for young people in various countries. Section 4 provides data on some of the educational changes made to reduce the costs of expanding educational offerings and to accommodate a better transition from school to work. Data are presented in the fifth section on some of the indexes of educational and job equality. The final two sections give information on disincentives to the hiring of youths and social costs related to education and youth unemployment. (LRA)
