Art Therapy-Expanding Horizons. The Practice of Art Therapy in a Special Education Setting.
Mayhew, Nancy
An art therapist addresses the issue of art therapy within the public school system. She describes her involvement within a cooperative special education program in which she provides direct individual and group therapy as well as consultation to regular class teachers. She reviews methods, materials, and approaches she has used in working with physically handicapped, learning disabled, behavior disordered, autistic, aphasic, hearing impaired, and mentally retarded children. Flexibility is suggested to be the key for an art therapist working in the public schools. Descriptions of art therapy with the specific handicapping conditions also include information on typical student characteristics and reactions to the art activities. (CL)
