Executive Summary of a Report on Alberta Assessment of School Mathematics: A Study Conducted for the Minister's Advisory Committee on Student Achievement.

This study is one of a series commissioned by the Minister's Advisory Committee on Student Achievement (MACOSA) to provide basic information for a summary of current levels of achievement in Alberta and to provide baseline data for future assessment. The assessment was conducted with students in grades 3, 6, 9, and 12. Students received questions appropriate to their grade level as well as review and preview items. Performance was satisfactory in number facts and computation. Unsatisfactory performance was found in problem solving, geometry, measurement, and consumer mathematics. Boys performed better than girls on all aspects of mathematics and this difference became more pronounced as grade level increased. Achievement differences were also related to school size and the interaction of school size and grade level. (MK)
