Statistical data concerning funds budgeted by 14 federal agencies for grants and contracts in science and engineering to institutions of higher education in fiscal year 1976 are compiled in this appendix of a report issued by the National Science Foundation. These funds provide an estimated 95 percent of all funds for scientific and engineering research and development at higher education institutions. It is noted that these statistics refer to amounts budgeted (obligations) and not actual expenditures. Funding categories excluded from the statistics are: loans, agency support of federal employee training and development activities, and all forms of indirect support such as funds allocated to state agencies. Six categories of allocations are included: (1) research and development; (2) research and development facilities; (3) facilities and equipment for instruction in sciences and engineering; (4) fellowships, traineeships, and training grants; (5) general support for science and engineering; and (6) other science and engineering activities. The data are tabulated by geographic distribution, agency, type of activity, amount received, field of science, and type of control. An institution listing by state is provided as well as data on federal obligations to various research and development centers. (SF)
