Tables show statistics detailing federal support to universities, colleges, and selected nonprofit institutions for fiscal year (FY) 1977. The figures represent all obligations to institutions of higher education in the U.S. from 14 federal agencies (which represent 95 percent of the total obligations to universities and colleges and 99 percent of the funding for scientific and engineering research and development in the institutions). Trend data for 1971-1977 on an individual institution basis are included. Technical notes are provided that discuss the scope of the survey; the relationship of the study to federal funds for research, development, and other scientific activities; and definitions of the categories. Summary tables describe federal obligations to universities and colleges by type of program and agency (FY 1963-FY 1977) and by agency and type of activity for FY 1977. Tables show the geographic distribution; institutions are ranked by order of amount received, by field of science, by type of control, and by state. Other tables provide information on federal obligations to university-administered federally-funded research and development centers, federal obligations to independent nonprofit research institutions, and federal obligations to federally-funded research and development centers administered by independent nonprofit organizations.
