The role and scope of the Montana University and postsecondary education system are described. It is explained that the primary goal of the Montana University System is to use as effectively as possible the resources available to it in providing high quality educational opportunities and service to the people of the state, encompassing the three traditional functions of a university--instruction, research, and public service. The missions of each of the six individual campuses are explored. The nature of the degree programs in the liberal arts (both the thematic programs and the interdisciplinary programs) and the non-degree area studies programs are discussed. The college(s) responsible for each of the areas of study and the degree(s) offered are identified for each of the following study areas: humanities, fine arts, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, teacher education, business and management, engineering, technology, industrial arts, home economics, allied health, human services, and unique professional programs (e.g., law, agriculture, physical therapy).
