Albanian: A Survey of Albanian Language and Literature. Area Background Studies.

This survey of Albanian language and literature is a synopsis of linguistic studies and literary achievements in Albania. The first chapter discusses the origin of the Albanian language. The next chapters deal with the Greek, Latin, Slavic, and Turkish influences on the Albanian language. The influence of Albanian on other Balkan languages and the relationship between Albanian and Romanian are also discussed. The survey of the literature is divided into four chapers: (1) the first Albanian texts, (2) the Romantic movement, (3) literary achievements from independence to communist dictatorship, and (4) literature under communism.
