An Assessment of the Need for Sex Education for the Mentally Retarded in North Dakota.
An assessment of the need for sex education for the mentally retarded in North Dakota is presented. A questionnaire was constructed and responses were received from 69 agencies having contact with the mentally retarded. The results of the questionnaire are provided in tabular form along with information on derived relationships to clarify the needs for sex education for this population. Among the findings are that there is a significant need to provide training for teachers and agency personnel in sex education for the mentally retarded, that the state plan must take into account this need, that the sexual needs of the mentally retarded are not understood by the general population, and that the education of the public to an acceptance of the sexuality of the retarded may be as critical as educating the mentally retarded. Seven recommendations are made including such suggestions as the development of a viable state plan which would coordinate agencies in the delivery of sex education services. Appended are the letter sent to the agencies, the questionnaire, a list of the committee members, and comments on specific needs (taken from the survey form). (Author/PHR)
