A Survey of LEA Planning Activities Required by State Departments of Education.
Moyer, Frank H.
One purpose of this survey was to determine those school planning activities that each State Department of Education (SDE) requires of the Local Education Agency (LEA) under its jurisdiction. Another purpose was to determine those SDE that either require or encourage the LEA to engage in long-range planning activities. An effort was made to determine the specific planning activities and the extent to which the SDE encourages community involvement in the planning process. A questionnaire was mailed to the chief school administrator in each of the fifty states. Responses ranged from "no planning required" to comprehensive, long-range planning, which includes community-staff involvement, needs assessment, goal articulation, and accountability mandated by the SDE. The study recommends that future planning activities include monitoring the allocation of resources and conducting an evaluation of the program. A directory of SEA planning offices is included. Noteworthy SEA planning publications are reviewed and an extensive glossary of terms relating to school planning is annexed. (Author/LD)
