Limits to Educational Change. Macmillan International College Editions. Studies on Education in Change.
This book is based on the assumption that we need to have a much better understanding of the process of educational change itself before we can expect reasonable returns from our innovative programs. It is a cross-cultural analysis of the process and dynamics of social change in general, and educational change in particular. The book is divided into six chapters, covering some of the following topics: (1) the problems of educational change, (2) a conceptual framework, (3) characteristics of the educational system and schools, (4) conflicting theories, (5) a framework for analyzing change, and (6) an alternative view of educational change. This book can be used by a practitioner to develop a diagnostic framework to analyze his or her own setting. The book also has a number of practical illustrations that might be of value in the day-to-day operations of both teachers and administrators. In addition, consultants and organizational theorists, who not only want to diagnose environments but also want to develop programs of change and innovation, would benefit from the alternative change models that are outlined.
