Lutheran Schools--15 Crucial Years. History of the Schools of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod from 1959 to 1973.
Kramer, William A.
The years 1959 through 1973, bringing changes and challenges to Lutheran schools in the Missouri Synod, are chronicled in this document. The first chapter touches on changes--in such areas as educational environment, teacher education, theological emphasis, and teaching methods--that have affected Lutheran schools. The second chapter details Lutheran school development, notably enrollment trends in elementary and secondary schools. Chapter 3 shows the relationships among congregations, districts, and the synod in the administration of schools and Christian education. Chapter 4 concentrates on local organization and administration--the board of education, the pastor, the principal, the director of Christian education, financing, and other administrative concerns. The purpose of chapter 5 is to show Lutheran schools' emphasis on quality, the ways quality has been pursued, and the major studies of Lutheran school quality. Chapter 6 focuses on Lutheran teacher education, including Lutheran teachers' colleges, methods of teacher placement, and biographical sketches of 14 administrators of Lutheran teachers' colleges. Chapter 7 deals with the printed resources the synod provides to schools. In chapter 8 relationships among Lutheran schools and other church-related, private, and public schools are explored. Chapter 9 summarizes what students of private schools and of Lutheran schools in particular predict about the future of such schools. (Author/JM)
