A Program To Improve Parenting Techniques and Skills.
Novick, Phyllis Thomas
This five-session research-based program trains parents in various skills through a series of experiential learning activities. An introductory chapter reviews the problem initiating the study, the purpose, importance, assumption, limitations, and plan of the study, along with a definition of terms. Next, a literature review examines materials which focus on parent involvement, leader guidelines, content, and success. The parent program itself covers the topics of active listening, talking to children, self-concept and acceptance, problem prevention and resolution, and constructive discipline. Plans for each session include step-by-step instructions for the leader, and copies for handouts which provide a workbook and reference for the parents. Each session is structured to include opportunity for small group interaction and support activities. Activities were selected on the basis of appropriateness to the sequence and research evidence supporting their effectiveness. (Author/LS)
