Communication Skills for Elementary Teachers-Staff: A Program Model for Multicultural Emphasis and Case Presentation.

This paper reports on a workshop which was designed to: (1) help participants participants the positive learn and/or enhance specific skills related to effective interpersonal communication; (2) provide opportunities for participants to examine their personal styles of interacting/teaching, give and receive feedback, identify areas in need of change, and work toward behavioral change; and (3) explore issues specific to multicultural communication. Specific areas addressed include attentiveness in interpersonal communication, listening skills, effective use of verbal and nonverbal behavior, awareness of culturally specific communication patterns, empathy development, behavioral approaches to respect, and action strategies. Activities which were conducted to help participants develop their skills in each of these areas are described. Participant response is discussed and general conclusions concerning communication and its role in multicultural education are summarized. (Author/EB)
