Potential for Television-Based Learning Systems. Final Report. RR 1978-26.
Nickerson, Rand; Teachman, Goody S.
A telephone survey was conducted in the TV Ontario major market areas to determine the potential for television based learning systems, which would include a television component, a variety of possible print components, and access to individual or group instruction by telephone or in person. The potential audience for a learning system of this type was examined, as well as possible topics of interest. The most desirable format and content were also analysed to determine the directions for future television based courses of study. The data are based on 1,242 telephone interviews with individuals 18 years or old or older, living in Toronto, London, or the Ontario part of Ottawa. This report describes the survey methodology and provides a profile of the sample population in terms of demographic data, television viewing habits, and adult learning experiences. Findings include the subjects' awareness of and desire to participate in such a system, as well as preferred subject areas and format, perceived advantages and disadvantages of this type of study, and their attitude toward television-based learning systems. A discussion of the findings and recommendations conclude the report. (JEG)
