Teacher Certification in Alabama--An Alternate View.

A critique is presented of the new teacher certification and program standards adopted by the State Board of Education of Alabama. The process by which these standards were developed is analyzed, and implications of developing these standards are examined. It is stated that the findings of two major studies of teacher education conducted in Alabama and current national research findings do not serve as a data base for the new teacher education and certification standards in the state. It is further pointed out that some of the specific criteria upon which the standards are based are contradictory to known research in teacher preparation. (JD)
