South Carolina Middle School Science Survey.

This study, which deals with the status of science education in the middle schools of South Carolina, is intended to be useful in: (1) developing middle school science teacher preparation programs; (2) revising certification requirements for middle school science teachers; (3) planning staff development activities for middle school science teachers; and (4) examining the science teacher's role in decisions which affect middle school science programs. Data were compiled from a survey involving 77 of the 130 South Carolina middle schools and 300 individual teachers provided additional information. Results are described in Section 1 under the headings of Demographic Characteristics, Programmatic Characteristics, Instructional Characteristics, Staff Development, Information and Decision-Making, and Limitations. Section II contains data analyses. The Appendix includes the cover letter accompanying the questionnaire, and the survey instrument. References are listed at the end of the report. (Author/SA)
