The Camp Chinkapin program, begun in 1957-58 as a pilot program for the State of Oregon, provides all sixth grade students in Crook County (Oregon) with a 5-day session in a resident camp setting in the early summer. The book serves as an introduction to and workbook for students attending the Crook County Outdoor Classroom at Suttle Lake. The book includes a camp map, rules and duties, and information about living conditions and counselors. There is information regarding growth zones in route to the camp and the geology of the site. Workbook exercises and activities include work with a map and compass, and the basics of land surveying in Oregon and Washington; weather; "pyramid of life"; geology of the earth and of Oregon; soil and water study; resource relationships; forest influences; tree study, including determining the age of trees; vocabulary; procedures to follow when lost in the woods; wildlife; field study of animals and plants; and creative writing.
