Kindergarten Curriculum Issues: Play. Bulletin No. 8063.
Bates, Sue Ann, Ed.
This bulletin for kindergarten teachers comprises five papers about the use and value of play in the kindergarten curriculum. Topics discussed include the values of various pieces of indoor and outdoor play equipment commonly found in the kindergarten; the nature of young children and their learning; the definition of play; the teacher's role as manager, observer, designer, evaluator and leader of children's play; the use of experiences with clay, including personification of clay forms, to make children aware of their own developmental phases; and the use of play to stimulate children's thinking and improve their approaches to problem solving. These papers are intended to encourage kindergarten teachers to reexamine the kindergarten curriculum and incorporate some of the suggestions into their classes. A questionnaire for the reader's evaluation of the bulletin is included. (Author/SS)
